Please join us for presentations by two accomplished alumni, Ellington Carthan (Jazz Studies and Music Technology, ‘18) and Hannah Korangkool (Graphic Design and Linehan Artist Scholar, ‘15), who will tell us about their journeys from UMBC to their current careers.

Ellington Carthan is a passionate educator and is an Assistant Professor of Music at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. His presentation, Thriving in the Arts: From UMBC to “Making it” will focus on the three crucial skills that have allowed him to thrive in the arts: Social Intelligence, Belief, and Honesty. His diverse career includes performing, teaching, and composing. In January 2022, Ellington released his debut live album Ellington Carthan Live: Volume 1. Since the album’s release he has performed for President Joseph Biden and Attorney General of Massachusetts Maura Healy. He has also performed at prestigious venues such as Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center, Blues Alley, Kennedy Center, Wolftrap, National Gallery of Art, Olney Theatre, Prima Theatre, as well as other venues throughout the mid-Atlantic. Ellington performed with renowned jazz vibraphonist Warren Wolf, opened for jazz icon Cecile McClorin Salvant, and performed with Afro Blue, Howard University’s premier vocal jazz ensemble. Like his mentor Cyrus Chestnut, Ellington enjoys blending genres and storytelling through jazz improvisation. Ellington graduated from UMBC in 2018 with dual degrees in jazz studies and music technology. He was a 2021 Strathmore Artist in Residence and received his Master of Music degree from Howard University in 2023.

Hannah Korangkool is senior graphic designer at the global headquarters of Actalent, a leading provider of engineering and sciences services and talent solutions. Hannah will share the value of venturing into uncharted territory (sometimes quite literally) and how embracing every opportunity for growth can shape your journey as an artist navigating today’s dynamic and often chaotic creative workforce. With over a decade of experience in the Baltimore area, Hannah has continually pushed the boundaries of graphic design, expanding her work into creative management and art direction—spanning everything from food photography to stadium-scale productions. Hannah’s journey reflects a deep commitment to visual storytelling and accessibility in design. Above all, it’s her unwavering dedication to integrity in design principles that defines her work and sets her apart in an ever-evolving creative landscape. Hannah graduated from UMBC in 2015 as a Linehan Artist Scholar with a BFA degree in Graphic Design. She was a recipient of the Undergraduate Research Scholar Grant, through which she interned at an independent film studio in Bangkok.
